چکیده

The notion that children from ‘good’ neighbourhoods are destined for success while those from ‘bad’ neighbourhoods are destined for failure has considerable popular appeal. Residential location is strongly linked to school quality, access to educated adults, exposure to violence, etc. There is, however, surprisingly little evidence on the link between the neighbourhood in which a child begins school and later schooling outcomes. Understanding early neighbourhood experiences is important for determining whether students are ‘stuck’ in neighbourhoods of disadvantage. It is also critical for determining the extent to which students who begin their schooling careers in disadvantaged neighbourhoods are destined for poor schooling outcomes, and conversely, whether changing neighbourhood context improves student performance. In this study, therefore, we document how students’ early neighbourhood and schooling experiences are related to later success in school, and explore how changing neighbourhood and school contexts explain differences in academic outcomes. Using data from New York City (NYC), we construct a panel containing all students enrolled as first graders in NYC public schools in 1996–1997, following them through academic years 2007–2008, which would be their 12th grade year if they made standard academic progress (annual one-grade promotion). Far from supporting the simplistic story of ‘dead-end’ neighbourhoods, our analyses describe a situation where students from poor neighbourhoods actually move more often than their peers in less disadvantaged Corresponding author: Sarah Cordes, New York University, Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, 665 Broadway, Suite 805, NY 10012, USA. The Neighbourhood Polynomial of some Nanostructures

The neighbourhood polynomial G , is generating function for the number of faces of each cardinality in the neighbourhood complex of a graph. In other word $N(G,x)=sum_{Uin N(G)} x^{|U|}$, where N(G) is neighbourhood complex of a graph, whose vertices are the vertices of the graph and faces are subsets of vertices that have a common neighbour. In this paper we compute this polynomial for some na...

Occupational Mobility and Living in Deprived Neighbourhoods: Housing Tenure Differences in ‘Neighbourhood Effects’

Occupational Mobility and Living in Deprived Neighbourhoods: Housing Tenure Differences in ‘Neighbourhood Effects’ The literature on neighbourhood effects suggests that the lack of social mobility of some groups has a spatial dimension. It is thought that those living in the most deprived neighbourhoods are the least likely to achieve upward mobility because of a range of negative neighbourhood...

An Analysis of the Behaviour of Citizens in People-oriented Suburban Spaces By using Pearson Correlation Coefficient; (Case study: the Centre of Sultan Mir Ahmad Neighbourhood, Kashan)

Studies conducted in the field of behaviour show that the necessity of noticing and determining urban space behaviour in field studies as well as surveys on dynamic small spaces is undeniable. Small urban spaces, including people-oriented spaces, involve social interactions. This study aims to consider the effect of small urban spaces on the volume of people’s social interactions and participat...

Neighbourhood Turnover and Teenage Attainment

Theories about neighbours’ influence on children based on social capital, cohesion and disorganisation stress the importance of neighbourhood stability. However, amongst the vast number of studies on the effect of neighbours on a child’s education, none has tested whether neighbourhood stability matters. We fill this gap by estimating the causal effect of residential turnover on student test sc...
